Why we Ride

Has anyone ever asked you why you ride a motorcycle? and you're not sure how to explain it in a way they would understand, especially if they've never ridden.

Well I'm sure you have, and as often as myself, so although people ride motorcycles for a variety of reasons I thought I'd try and put it into words and suggest some of the reasons why I've been riding motorcycles for over 40 years and enjoy that combination of freedom, excitement, skill, community, and sensory experience which creates a unique appeal that continues to attract thousands of motorcyclists all around the world.

Freedom of the Open Road:

Riding a motorcycle offers an unparalleled sense of freedom. Without the confines of a car, riders feel connected to the environment around them, experiencing the open road in its entirety.

The ability to navigate twists and turns, feel the wind against your skin, and soak in the sights, sounds and smells of the journey contributes to a liberating experience that many riders cherish.

Thrill and Adrenaline Rush:

One of the primary appeals of riding a motorcycle is the adrenaline rush it provides. The acceleration, speed, and manoeuvrability of motorcycles offer an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers.

Whether it's the excitement of hitting high speeds on a straight stretch of highway or the challenge of tackling winding mountain roads, riding a motorcycle can satisfy the need for adventure and adrenaline.

Sense of Mastery and Skill Development:

Operating a motorcycle requires a unique set of skills and techniques. Learning to control the throttle, handlebars, brakes, and clutch demands concentration and coordination.

Riders often take pride in honing their skills and mastering the art of riding, whether through practice sessions, formal training programs, or participating in motorcycle sports like track racing or motocross.

Community and Camaraderie:

Motorcycling fosters a strong sense of community among enthusiasts. Riders often form bonds with fellow bikers through shared experiences, such as group rides, motorcycle rallies, or online forums.

The camaraderie within the motorcycle community provides a supportive network where riders can exchange advice, share stories, and forge lasting friendships based on their mutual love of riding.

Sensory Experience:

Riding a motorcycle engages the senses in a way that few other activities can match. The roar of the engine, the rush of wind, and the feel of the road beneath the wheels create a multi-dimensional sensory experience.

From the panoramic views of the landscape to the scent of pine trees or freshly cut grass, every sensory input adds depth and richness to the ride, enhancing the overall enjoyment for riders.

Escape and Stress Relief:

Riding a motorcycle offers a temporary escape from the stresses of daily life. The focus required to navigate the road and the freedom of movement can provide a sense of liberation and relaxation.

Many riders find solace and mental clarity while riding, using it as a form of therapy or meditation to clear their minds and rejuvenate their spirits.

Versatility and Practicality:

Motorcycles are versatile vehicles that can serve a variety of purposes. From commuting to work to embarking on long-distance tours, motorcycles offer practical transportation solutions for different needs and lifestyles.

In congested urban areas, motorcycles can be more manoeuvrable and efficient than cars, allowing riders to navigate through traffic and find parking more easily.

Personal Expression and Customization:

Just like with cars, motorcycles can be a form of personal expression. Riders often customize their bikes to reflect their personality, style, and preferences.

Whether it's adding aftermarket parts, custom paint jobs, or unique accessories, the ability to personalize their motorcycles allows riders to create a machine that is truly their own.

Connection with Nature and the Outdoors:

Riding a motorcycle offers a direct connection with nature and the outdoors. Unlike being enclosed in a car, riders are immersed in the elements, feeling the temperature, weather, and terrain first hand.

Whether it's cruising along coastal highways, winding through mountain passes, or exploring scenic countryside, riding a motorcycle allows riders to experience the beauty of nature in an intimate way.

Cost and Accessibility: For some, motorcycles offer a more affordable means of transportation compared to cars. They require less maintenance, have lower upfront costs, and can be easier to park and manoeuvre in city centres.

Sense of Adventure and Exploration:

Riding a motorcycle encourages a spirit of adventure and exploration. The ability to venture off the beaten path, discover new destinations, and embrace the unknown appeals to the adventurer within many riders.

Whether it's embarking on spontaneous road trips, seeking out hidden gems, or tackling challenging terrain, motorcycles provide a platform for endless exploration and discovery, fuelling the sense of adventure in riders.

Overall, our reasons for riding motorcycles are as diverse as the riders themselves, encompassing a blend of practicality, passion, and a love for the open road, but for me also a feeling of belonging, being part of a community, a family, all sharing our love for two wheels.
